Top 10 Biomedical Innovations in 2023

 2024-01-08 10:10

At the yearend of 2023, the American BioPharma Business Development (ABBD) Group has surveyed a panel of world renowned experts in pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry and summarized 10 revolutionary biomedical advances that may permanently change our lives.

  1. The new generation of mRNA vaccine technology will completely change our disease treatment strategy, including the treatment of various diseases such as cancer. mRNA technology will be based on individual unique genetic characteristics, making personalized treatment possible!

  2. PSMA targeted therapy for prostate cancer, targeting a specific prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) protein and injecting a radioactive compound that binds to PSMA protein, has shown significant and promising results in clinical trials; Its side effects are minimal, cancer cells are destroyed, while healthy cells remain unaffected.

  3. A new drug for type II diabetes, SGLT2 inhibitor, is targeted at specific proteins that manage blood sugar levels. By preventing these proteins from exerting their effects, excess glucose will be excreted through urine, thereby lowering overall blood sugar levels and helping to lose weight!

  4. The breakthrough treatment for postpartum depression, Brexanolone, is specifically designed for efficient and rapid treatment of postpartum depression with minimal side effects. This drug works by increasing the level of GABA (a neurotransmitter that regulates emotions) in the body. Symptoms improve shortly after medication, and there are very few or no reported adverse reactions.

  5. Targeted drugs for hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a new drug with MYPT1 inhibitors, specifically targeting specific proteins involved in myocardial thickening. By blocking the action of this protein, it reduces myocardial thickness and improves the ability of the heart to pump blood.

  6. A new therapy for reducing low-density lipoprotein, PCSK9 inhibitor, works by blocking the PCSK9 protein, which controls the level of LDL cholesterol in the blood. For patients who find it difficult to maintain cholesterol levels solely through traditional statin therapy, the use of PCSK9 inhibitors can significantly reduce LDL cholesterol levels and better control their health.

  7. Non-hormone replacement therapy for menopause, MLE4901 is a breakthrough drug specifically targeting proteins that regulate hot flashes to reduce redness, without the need for hormone replacement therapy.

  8. Implantable devices for severe paralysis activate the spinal cord through electrical stimulation to restore the movement and sensation of the paralyzed limb. By sending electrical pulses to the spinal cord, they trigger muscle contraction and movement, which has the potential to significantly improve the independence and mobility of severely paralyzed patients.

  9. Artificial intelligence used for early detection of sepsis, based on a large amount of patient data, identifies early signs that may indicate the presence of sepsis.

  10. Predictive analysis and hypertension, using machine learning algorithms to analyze large amounts of patient data and identify high-risk individuals for hypertension. Patterns and trends that medical personnel are unaware of can be detected, enabling earlier detection and intervention to reduce the risk of complications caused by hypertension.
